It was great to see our students back for day 2 with enthusiasm and a readiness to learn. We started our day using the questions we made yesterday to learn more about each other by doing quick student interviews. We learned a lot about all of our students and the students also found out more about Mrs. Cooper and Ms. Rauser.
We enjoyed a book that reminded us about the importance of following rules. The class generated and agreed on six rules that we will all follow to help us have a successful year.
1. Be kind, respectful and helpful to each other
2. Listen to others when they are talking
3. Keep the classroom, school and playground clean - always pick up after yourself
4. Be responsible and honest
5. Be safe and keep your hands to yourself
6. Always try your best and work hard
We then did a written activity where students used the below sentence template to incorporate the above rules in actual scenarios and locations.
After reading If Everybody Did, we started a writing project following the format of:
If everybody in the classroom ___________________ then _________________.
If everybody outside _________________________ then _________________.
Mrs. Cooper's class played one of our favorite math games - Race to 100. Your child can play this game with you - all you need is two dice. It's fun and great for practicing basic facts and adding two digit to one digit numbers.
Ms. Rauser's class looked at some interesting pictures, quotes, graphs, and cartoons. In groups they followed the following group generated structure:
1. Observations
2. Questioning the picture
3. Is there a reason the picture was taken or created?
4. What is the solution? Can I think of anything creative that can be done about it?
Tomorrow each class will switch with these two activities.
Students learned about 'Daily 5' READ-TO-SELF today. Most are familiar with this at Cranston school. We reviewed different ways you could read a book (e.g., read and talk about the pictures, read the words, retell a previously read book to yourself, etc.). This was then put in practice for 5 minutes. Each day this will increase in time. Students also learned how to pick a 'just right book'.
